John Mayer and presidential candidate John Edwards have more in common than great hair: Both are interested in reaching the youth of America.
To that end, Mayer, 29, chatted with Edwards, 53, last week at the TIME Magazine 100 gala in New York City, New York
"He was talking about the language of young people, his generation," Edwards tells the magazine. "He basically said, 'You've got to get me in the first 20 seconds. I watch movies on YouTube, and if they're 25 seconds long, they're five seconds too long.' "
The unlikely political bedfellows were at the event because Mayer and Edwards's wife Elizabeth, who is battling cancer
, were selected by TIME as two of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Edwards tells New York
that he set up a meeting with Mayer so that he can hear more from the singer also known as Jessica Simpson's boyfriend.
Mayer, who has been writing on his blog
recently about his efforts to gradually make his lifestyle more environmentally friendly (an approach he's dubbed "Light Green"), knows how to be subtle: After he performed an acoustic set at the TIME dinner, he noted: "There's a whole different approach to playing music for those who are eating. If it's a red wine, I usually go with something ballad-y."
