• Ellen DeGeneres, spending the afternoon with girlfriend Portia de Rossi for a joint shopping trip in Beverly Hills.

• Jake Gyllenhaal, making a surprise appearance during the sold-out Rufus Wainwright concert at New York's Blender Theater at Gramercy. The black-clad actor – sporting a brooch that matched the band's equally sparkling accessories – playfully delivered the short monologue that accompanies Wainwright's song "Between My Legs." Also in the audience that night: 3rd Rock from the Sun's Kristen Johnston.

• How did Nelly Furtado get ready for her big New York show at Madison Square Garden? By eating her veggies. The singer and three pals tucked into raw-food eatery Pure Food and Wine's five-course tasting menu as the restaurant piped Furtado's "Promiscuous" over the sound system. "It was casual," a source tells us. "They were laughing, having fun and trying each others' dishes."

• John Mayer, hugging the deejay and working the floor at Hollywood hot spot Parc, following the first of his two sold-out Hollywood Bowl concerts. The man of the hour arrived at midnight and headed straight for the back of the room, where he had a table, vodka and champagne waiting – and soon found Penélope Cruz. The actress had arrived with Shakira, and the two spent the night giggling uncontrollably and speaking Spanish.

• Jeremy Piven, ratcheting up the bidding during an auction to support his parents' theater – the Piven Theater Workshop – at Chicago's Rockit Bar & Grill. When the bids for two courtside seats to a Chicago Bulls game stalled at $1,500, the Entourage star told the crowd, "I'll sit with whoever buys these tickets!" His tactic worked: A flurry of cards went up – and the bidding escalated to $5,000.
