"Over the last ten years I personally feel as though she's always there," Harry, 22, tells Matt Lauer in the interview scheduled to air on the Today show and Dateline NBC Monday.
Adds Prince William, 24, of his mother's death: "After it happened we were always thinking about it. ...There's not a day goes by I don't think about it."
In fact, Harry says he'll never stop wondering what exactly happened to his mother on that fateful August night in Paris when the car she was riding in crashed. "Whatever happened in that tunnel, you know no one will ever know," he tells Lauer. "And I'm sure people will always think about that... I'll never stop wondering about that.'
To celebrate the memory of their mother, the Princes have planned a concert on July 1 – Princess Diana's actual birthday – in London. (NBC will air the special on July 1 at 8 p.m. ET.)
Another topic of conversation: the Princes' attempts to lead "normal" lives despite being public figures. Harry tells Lauer: "Within our private life and within certain other parts of our life we want to be as normal as possible." But, he admits: "It's hard, because to a certain respect we never will be normal."
William, who recently went through a very public breakup with his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, says that sometimes their royal status makes it difficult to form relationships with people. "I don't want to be liked by someone just because of who I am. I don't want the sycophantic people hanging around."
But Prince Harry tells Lauer that those trust issues go both ways with their true pals. "It's just as hard for our friends as it is for us," he explains. "The reason I say that is because our friends have to put up with a lot – when it comes to us." Adds William: "There's a lot of baggage that comes with us, trust me – a lot of baggage.
On a lighter note, the two also share their dream professions, if they were not British royals, of course. William tells Lauer he would love to be a helicopter pilot or work for the United Nations, while his younger brother would like to live in Africa and work as "a safari guide," he says.
