Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines is prepping to take a new kind of lead in her career – in a feature film.

Maines, one third of the Grammy Award-winning Texas trio, has just been cast to make her film acting debut in an indie flick set to begin shooting in September, Stealing Cars – and she's turning to her husband, Heroes star Adrian Pasdar, for pointers.

"He's a huge help and very supportive," says Maines, 32. "He has given me advice me on auditions in the past, but it still makes me nervous because I'm inexperienced when it comes to acting and he's a professional."

Still, when it comes to her new role, Maines, who is known for her outspoken personality, says, "I'm very excited. It's something I've always wanted to do. I've auditioned here and there, but we've always been busy with Dixie Chicks stuff, and with movies you have to be available."

This won't be her first time on screen, however. Last year, Maines starred with her bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson in the documentary Shut Up and Sing, which chronicled the fallout from a 2003 London concert, at the start of the war in Iraq, when Maines told the audience: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."

After seeing Shut Up and Sing, documentary filmmaker Michael Skolnik approached Maines for Stealing Cars.

"It's my dream scenario to have a director who believes in me and thinks I can do it. It helps too that I relate to the story," says Maines, who's cast as a prison nurse.

As she readies herself for the movie, Maines will also enjoy some downtime with her family. She and Pasdar have two sons, Jackson, 6, and Beckett, 3.

"I live at the beach," she said. "We play volleyball there every Saturday." As for the other Chicks, "They live in Texas, and we're all busy being moms. It's nice."
