Caught in the Act!

• While stars flocked to Las Vegas for MTV's Video Music Awards, Hilary Duff hit the party scene in Toronto. The pop star visited downtown club This Is London with hockey player beau Mike Comrie (plus an entourage of 30). The couple cuddled and danced together all night long from their perch on the third-floor VIP section overlooking the dancefloor.

• Back in Las Vegas, the stars hit up local gifting suites before the big MTV Video Music Awards telecast. The Hills cast visited the Style Villa at Caesars, going crazy at the Lia Sophia jewelry cabana (where Lauren Conrad picked up one of everything). Meanwhile, rapper Eve headed for the TAO Hospitality suite in the Disney Couture lounge – and was excited to be rid of her alcohol monitoring device. She explained that she had cut it off with scissors, then celebrated with a glass of champagne. Elsewhere, Joss Stone ran into rapper Nelly at The Star Lounge at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino before her concert, and the two helped one another choose what to take home.

• The night of the VMAs, Entourage stars Adrian Grenier and Kevin Connolly skipped most of the telecast, and instead sipped margaritas in the Palms' lobby accompanied by two blonde women. Before Grenier arrived, Connolly had the ladies to himself – and when his costar showed up, attention seemed to shift to Grenier. Connolly seemed fine either way – passing the time on his phone and pressing buttons on an unfed blackjack machine at the bar.

• At a VMA afterparty at TAO Las Vegas, Janet Jackson mingled with her beau (and the party's host) Jermaine Dupri but demurred when asked about new music she is recording. "She's being modest," Dupri tells us about the record, which he will oversee. "She's been recording, like, every day. I just want her to have fun." Meanwhile, Travis Barker (another party host) held court along with Shanna Moakler. The pair sat in a VIP booth with Dupri, Jackson, rapper Nelly and his fiancée Ashanti. While the couples enjoyed the music, talk turned (slightly) serious as Barker offered a little parenting advice to Britney Spears. Says Barker: "You shouldn't be seen every night partying when everyone knows you have two babies. It's just common sense."

• Back in Los Angeles, America Ferrera followed up presenting the final awards at the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys with her own artistic experience the next day – laughing through a production of Avenue Q at the Ahmanson Theatre.

• And in New York, Jake Gyllenhaal scoped out the final day at the U.S. Open, walking into the men's finals match in a blue T-shirt and gold-rimmed aviator shades. The actor, who just returned from Toronto, brushed right past photographers and into the VIP section to watch. Also there: Robert De Niro, Christie Brinkley and funnyman Robin Williams, who joked with a security guard who asked if he was going to finals party for VIPs. Teased Williams: "I just got out of rehab, what are you trying to do to me?"
