"I feel pretty lucky we got out of it," Clooney told PEOPLE at the premiere of Michael Clayton on Monday night.
"It's scary," he added. "We never really saw it coming."
Clooney's Burn After Reading costar, Brad Pitt, himself a cyclist, sent Clooney a message after hearing about the accident. "How bad?" asked Pitt. "Not so bad," replied Clooney.
According to police, Clooney, 46, was driving his Harley-Davidson north on Boulevard East in Weehawken, N.J., at 3:30 p.m. when he collided with a 1999 Mazda Millenia. Clooney – accompanied by Larson, 28 – was passing on the right of the vehicle as it attempted to make a right turn on the two-lane road.
The actor explained: "They signaled left and went right ... We got hit." Clooney suffered a hairline fracture of a rib and road rash, and Larson broke her big toe.
"She seems like she can take it, huh?" Clooney said of Larson, who looked gorgeous and graceful on her crutches.
Larson made her debut as Clooney's new gal at the Venice and Deauville film festivals earlier this month. At the Manhattan premiere, Clooney said that he took Larson on the motorcycle because he wanted to show her the city from a different perspective.
"We wanted to get the view of New York from that side," he said.
