Madonna and the Beastie Boys are among those up for consideration for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition to the Material Girl and the rap trio, nominees announced Friday include singer John Mellencamp, disco queen Donna Summer, hip-hop star Afrika Bambaataa, jazz-funk group Chic, singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, the British-invasion band the Dave Clark Five and the 1960s group The Ventures.

Though nine artists are being considered for inclusion in the Rock Hall, only five will be honored at the induction ceremony in New York on March 12, 2008. The five finalists be announced in January.

To be eligible for nomination, a performer or group must have released a first single or album at least 25 years ago. This year's nominees were required to release their first single no later than 1982.

Kickstarting her career by establishing herself as a New York music scene cult figure, in 1982, Madonna, now 49, signed with Sire Records. Over the remainder of the decade, she went on have seven No. 1 songs (including 1984's "Like a Virgin"), three No. 1 albums and 17 top 10 hits.
