Omigod—It's Been 20 Years! Pretty in Pink
PIP had it all: Class clashes (spunky, working-class girl falls for cute rich boy), totally '80s fashions (that pink prom dress) and yes, the Duck Man. Two decades after it became a coming-of-age fave, we catch up with THE CAST...
The St. Elmo's Fire and Weekend at Bernie's vet, now 43, married his college sweetheart and is the father of son Sam, 4. Based in New York City, he mainly appears on television (last season's E-Ring) and Broadway and recently directed a short film, News for the Church.
The '80s teen queen, now 38, lives in New York City with her daughter Mathilda, 2. (Dad is her boyfriend, writer Panio Gianopoulos.) She stars in the touring version of Sweet Charity and says she's game for a PIP sequel: "I sort of imagine [Andie] really succeeding."
"What I liked about Duckie was he thought he was the coolest guy in the room—regardless of the evidence to the contrary," says Cryer, 41, whose career is on a roll: Up for an Emmy for CBS's Two and a Half Men, he dates reporter Lisa Joyner and has a son, Charlie, 6, from his first marriage.
PIP "was a really lovely experience," says Potts, 53, who played Andie's kooky record store boss. The former Designing Women star is taking a showbiz breather to focus on "having a very nice life" with her three sons (ages 10, 14 and 25) and husband, TV director James Hayman.
Back in the '80s, his specialty was playing preppy cads like PIP's feather-haired Steff. But after a string of influential indie roles (including '89's Sex, Lies and Videotape) the 46-year-old actor and single father won kudos—and an Emmy—in '05 for his work on ABC's Boston Legal.
5 TOTALLY RAD SECRETS OF A GEN-X CLASSIC
THE DRESS DISAPPEARED!
Sold in a movie-props auction a few years ago, the baggy frock has been MIA ever since. "It was supposed to capture the individuality of who Molly was in the film," says PIP costumer Marilyn Vance.
YES, THAT'S ANDREW DICE CLAY
Among the then-unknowns who landed bit roles: Gina Gershon, Dweezil Zappa, Kristy Swanson (who lusts for Duckie) and '80s comic Clay.
ROBERT DOWNEY DUCKIE?
Anthony Michael Hall passed on the role and Robert Downey Jr. was considered, but director Howard Deutch fell for Cryer's vulnerability. "There was this thing about him where you didn't want him to get hurt," says Deutch.
THE CHEMISTRY WAS FAKE
To create sparks between his leads, "I would tell Andrew that Molly really had this crush on him, which was true, and Molly that Andrew had this big crush on her, which wasn't true," says Deutch. "It worked."
DUCKIE ALMOST GOT THE GIRL
The original ending called for Andie to choose Duckie over rich guy Blane—until test audiences booed. "Girls wanted Andie to go with the cute boy," says Deutch. The ending had to be reshot and McCarthy, who had already shaved his head for another role, wears a wig in the final scene.
