During the Aug. 27 ceremony, Jeremy Piven took it on the chin when he won for Entourage. Onstage "I went to kiss my Emmy and impaled myself with it—I immediately started bleeding," he said. "Everybody I kissed after that got blood on them." ... A few other attendees were afflicted with car trouble; the air conditioning was on the blink in My Name is Earl nominee Jaime Pressly's limo. "I'm sweating pretty much everywhere," she said of the 88° heat. And Martin and Charlie Sheen's limos were stuck in traffic for so long, producers "had to send golf carts to get us," said Martin.... Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin managed to get there early—before arrivals even began—and used the time to sign autographs. Clearly, Harry was trying to win votes for his upcoming spin on Dancing with the Stars. "Yesterday I learned my first tango moves," he said.... Arrested Development's Portia de Rossi went solo, with partner Ellen DeGeneres in New York to work on her talk show. But she had something very special on hand: a Tiffany solitaire on her ring finger, which DeGeneres recently gave her. "I really wanted to wear it tonight," she said. "We've been calling each other all day." ... After her May split from husband Matthew Moline, Kathy Griffin nuzzled with a new love everywhere from the red carpet to the Entertainment Tonight/PEOPLE party: Major Todd Breasseale of the U.S. Army, whom she met when she did a comedy show for the troops in Baghdad in April. "He's a fascinating guy," she said of Breasseale, who's now stationed in D.C. "He's smart, he's traveled the world, he's hardworking—and he's really cute!" ... TV docs Chandra Wilson of Grey's Anatomy and Sarah Chalke of Scrubs were birthday girls on Emmy night. Wilson, who turned 37, planned to party after the show, but Chalke, 30, got a sweet start: "My family from Canada sent me a cake," she said.... Two and a Half Men nominee Jon Cryer began the day by burning calories. He woke up at 4 a.m. to compete in a minitriathlon in Santa Barbara. "It takes my mind off the Emmys because you can get very nervous," he said.... The TV Guide party was so packed that Matthew Perry, among others, was shut out of the ballroom by a fire marshal just before Pink was to perform. He settled for a glass of water at the bar instead.... Finally, with the IRS stiffening up its tax rules, some stars chose to leave without a gift bag this year. "I waived mine," said Megan Mullally of the loot, estimated at $33,000. "The gift bags got so much attention because it was a splashy thing to talk about, and now we're all getting screwed as a result!" Of course, she was one actress who went home with something even better—an Emmy.
RETURN OF THE ANGELS
It didn't quite take divine intervention, but the struggle to bring Charlie's Angels together after 29 years went down to the wire
Let theologians fret over how many angels fit on the head of a pin at the same time; minutes before showtime, Emmy producers still weren't sure they could get TV's three most famous seraphim on one stage at the same time. "It has not been an easy task, [bringing] us together," admits Jaclyn Smith, 60, who, with Farrah Fawcett, 59, and Kate Jackson, 57, agreed to reunite for the Aaron Spelling tribute only about 10 days before Emmy night. "The pressure, I think, was: What do people expect? Will they be judging?" explains Fawcett. "When we really got commitments from all three of us, we had to talk and agree about what we would and wouldn't do and say."
Even so, as she and Smith awaited their cue in their dressing rooms, Jackson was having a last-minute dispute with a producer about the wording of her script. Says a source: "Nobody knew until a few minutes before if Kate would go onstage."
As the clock wound down and the tension shot up, the issue was resolved and the trio walked out—only to find the teleprompter didn't work. "It was a little frightening," says Smith. "I told Farrah, 'We're just going to have to wing it.'"
Happily, their old angel wings did still work. "We've been friends for 30 years," says Jackson. "It was so much fun."
WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE ANGEL?
I liked Jaclyn Smith. She had dark hair, but it was still glamorous.
I was Kate. Kate had the smaller boobs and was the smart one.
Farrah Fawcett was pretty hot. I still have the poster.
INSIDE THE GREENROOM
The Architectural Digest greenroom was a festive pit stop thanks to a Moroccan theme. Matthew Perry (left) and Bradley Whitford rehearsed their banter before presenting. ("Let's go with Plan A, the old one," said Perry. "Okay, got it—let's go!" said Whitford.) Later, Virginia Madsen reunited with her Firewall costar Harrison Ford and his real life leading lady, Calista Flockhart. Said Madsen of her Kevan Hall gown: "Everyone's talking about my cleavage—they ask why.... I say, why not?"
ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT & PEOPLE
More than 700 guests turned out for the purple-themed fête at the Mondrian.
"Eva [Longoria] worked all day long," said boyfriend Tony Parker, who offered her a seat after a long night.
Michael Vartan grabbed a drink before watching musical guest Prince perform.
Heidi Klum got close to husband Seal, who called being with her "the highlight" of the evening.
Jennifer Love Hewitt (in Collette Dinnigan) brought her boyfriend of nine months, Scottish actor Ross McCall.
The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick kept husband Kevin Bacon close by all night "to kiss at any moment," she said.
Kiefer Sutherland (with his father, Donald) showed off his Emmy loot.
Her show didn't win, but Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo still celebrated with boyfriend Chris Ivery.
The party featured the celeb group Band from TV with Hugh Laurie on keyboards.
Band guitarist James Denton admitted: "I'm good enough to know I'm not very good."
Singing a medley of her hits, Pink got the party started at packed club Social Hollywood.
A nominee for the miniseries Mrs. Harris, Annette Bening (in vintage Ceil Chapman) held court with husband Warren Beatty at the Pacific Design Center fête.
Paula Abdul (ready to tango in Dolce & Gabbana with Entourage's Rex Lee) called the party "a blast."
"I'm like a real girl tonight!" said Mary Lynn Rajskub (who plays plain-Jane Chloe on 24) of her Max Azria Atelier gown.
The drink of the night at FOX's fête (held at Spago): platinum-colored sugar-rimmed martinis.
