REVIEWED BY LAUREN GALLO
At 25, Karen Russell is a storyteller with a voice like no other. Populated by curious children and eccentric grown-ups, the 10 tales in her first collection are quirky modern fables. "Haunting Olivia" is set in the Florida Everglades, where two brothers embark in the shell of a giant crab on a quest to find the ghost of their dead sister. The title story follows the fate of girls "rescued" from wolf-parents and reprogrammed by nuns. Laced with humor and compassion, Russell's work has the charm of children's literature adapted for adults.
