GOING (A LITTLE) PUBLIC
Back from Hawaii, Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson step out—quietly
It's no longer a secret: Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson are definitely out and about and having a fun time together. On Sept. 17 Wilson visited Hudson and pals at her Pacific Palisades house. Then, later that evening, the two shared a patio booth at the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel, where they ordered drinks and, at one point, requested that a bamboo divider be placed around their table for privacy. The You, Me and Dupree costars had also been spotted the week before in Hawaii, where Hudson, 27, was vacationing with son Ryder, 2. Wilson, 37, stayed at a home nearby, and the pair shared a dinner on Sept. 7 with friends at Longhi's restaurant. "The chemistry between [Hudson and Wilson], the electricity, was palpable," says an onlooker. "They really looked into each other, despite the fact that they were among other people." Wilson's rep, who previously denied reports of a romance, now has "no comment on his personal life." But, says a witness at the Polo Lounge, their enjoyment of each other is perfectly clear: Hudson couldn't stop smiling at Wilson all night.
GEORGE GOES TO THE U.N.
George Clooney cares about war-ravaged Darfur so much that he appeared at the United Nations Security Council Sept. 14 to lobby for an intervention of U.N. peacekeepers in the province. But make no mistake: He harbors no illusions about his role in the effort. "I'm not the policymaker," he told Scoop. "I'm the guy to say, 'The cameras will follow me and they're going to shine on you guys.'" The actor, 45, who visited the area for a week last spring, says, "The danger of celebrity is to go, 'It was so sad for me.' The truth is it is sad for the millions and millions whose lives are being destroyed." Indeed, according to the U.N., 2 million people have been displaced and 400,000 killed in Darfur, a province of Sudan. Says Clooney: "My job is to say [to the U.N.], 'It's now or never.'" The pleas from Clooney and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel, who testified with the actor, were well received: President George W. Bush appointed a special envoy to the area, and African Union peacekeeping troops will likely be allowed to stay past the previous Sept. 30 deadline. Still, "these are tiny steps on a long road," says Clooney. "Write your representatives. Tirelessly. They need to know that you object to this genocide. Make some noise."
Ah, young love. Singer Aaron Carter, 18, became engaged to his girlfriend, Playboy Playmate Kari Ann Peniche, 22—whom he has been dating either less than a week or more than a month, depending on whom you ask—on Sept. 16 in Las Vegas. Carter popped the question to Peniche onstage at the Playboy's Hollywood Comedy Tour in front of 200 audience members at the Palms Casino. "I had no idea he was going to do this," the giddy ex-beauty queen told Scoop. "But I'm glad he did. Aaron is the most genuine person I know." Aaron, his brother Nick, 26 (who has also dated Peniche), and their three sisters star in the E! reality show House of Carters premiering Oct. 2. No wedding date has been set. But why slow down now?

Lindsay's Growing Pains
Lindsay Lohan has toned down her partying and is "living clean," says a source close to the actress, 20. But there's still plenty of drama in her life. On September 14 a birthday dinner at New York City's Philippe for her mom, Dina, 44, turned ugly when, onlookers say, the older Lohan picked a fight with her famous daughter. (Lindsay "was miserable," says one witness, and stormed out, telling her mom to "go to hell.") After 17 years in showbiz together, tension between the two is only natural, says a source. "[Lindsay] is no longer a teenager. She needs her mother less in a managing capacity and more as a family member." Case in point: Just one day after their big birthday blowout, when the Prairie Home Companion star slipped on a wet floor at a Manhattan party and fractured two bones in her arm, her Long Island-based mother rushed to her side.

No offense, fans! But Orlando Bloom is ready to put Pirates behind him
Shy is the name of Orlando Bloom's character in the gritty thriller Haven, and it's also a fair description of the actor. British-born Bloom, 29, talked to Scoop about his embarrassment doing love scenes, keeping his own love life private—and Marlon "Hottie" Brando.
Your costar Zoë Saldaña tells us that kissing you was "gross." How could she?
I hated kissing Zoë too! I was like, "Take your tongue out of my mouth, please. Your boyfriend is standing right there." Most people think kissing beautiful costars must be great. But it's always awkward, man.
Haven, about doomed teenage love on Grand Cayman, is darker than your big blockbusters. Did that appeal to you?
Some people have said it's too hard-core for teenage audiences. But it deals with [real] issues. You go on vacation, sit by the pool, go to the bar.... In this movie you get to see the underbelly of ... the Cayman Islands.
You've reportedly split with Kate Bosworth.
People always ask me whether [we're] together or not. It's still nobody's business.
Fair enough. Can you give us an update on Pirates of the Caribbean?
We're in the middle of part 3. I've loved working on Pirates, but I'm looking forward to new projects. When you do a movie that's so successful, people think that's all you've done. "Oh, he's that pirate guy!"
Or "that heartthrob guy"?
That doesn't bother me. Name any of my heroes, and they were hotties. Brando was a pinup, so was James Dean, Paul Newman. I'm not going to [rest] on my "teen hottie" laurels. I have aspirations to do more than that. [Still] they're very loyal fans, those teenage girls! I definitely appreciate them.
