BIRTHS
Grandmama mia! Sophia Loren, 71, became a grandmother for the first time May 12, when her youngest son, Edoardo Ponti, and his fiancée, NCIS star Sasha Alexander, both 33, welcomed their first child, Lucia Sofia, in Geneva, where Loren resides. Says Ponti: "Is my mother now the world's most beautiful grandmother? Of course she is."

RECUPERATING
The Office star Steve Carell's timing was off when he sprained his ankle May 13 in Richmond, Va. Carell, 42, fell while stepping out of a Hummer in a scene for Evan Almighty, the sequel to the 2003 hit Bruce Almighty, in which he played Jim Carrey's anchorman rival. His rep says he's doing fine.

LEGAL MATTERS
Snoop Dogg, a.k.a. Calvin Broadus, 37, was issued a police caution May 11 after an arrest stemming from a brawl at London's Heathrow Airport last month. British Airways staff denied members of Dogg's entourage access to a first-class lounge because most were flying coach. A fight broke out, and seven police officers were injured in the melee.

UPDATE
On May 10, more than three years after the tragic Great White concert fire in Providence, R.I., the group's ex-tour manager Daniel Biechele was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter for setting off the heavy-metal band's pyrotechnic display without a permit. The Feb. 20, 2003, blaze at the Station nightclub left 100 people dead and nearly 200 more injured (PEOPLE, March 10, 2003). The judge asserted that Biechele's actions were "totally devoid of criminal intent." A tearful Biechele, 29, expressed his remorse to the court: "I don't know that I'll ever forgive myself for what happened that night, so I can't expect anybody else to."

OUTCOME!
After 39 days on a Panama beach, Survivor winner Aras Baskauskas plans to spend the $1 million he took home from the May 14 finale on a roof over his head. "I'm going to move out, find a bachelor pad and pay Pop's mortgage," says the yoga instructor, 24, who lives with his dad.

OUTLAW!
In other Survivor news, the court has spoken: Richard Hatch is headed to prison. Hatch, the show's first champ back in 2000, was sentenced May 16 in Providence, R.I., to 51 months in the penitentiary after his conviction in January for failing to report $1.4 million of income from his Survivor prize and other earnings (PEOPLE, Jan. 31, 2005). Baskauskas should heed host Jeff Probst's final words of advice last Sunday: "Pay your taxes!"

FAREWELL, SORAYA
A passionate voice in the battle against breast cancer fell silent May 10, when Latin music star Soraya, 37, succumbed to the disease (which had also claimed the lives of her mother, aunt and grandmother) in Miami. Soraya lit up the Latin pop scene with her 1996 hit "De Repente" and won a Latin Grammy in 2004. In her last days, she wrote a farewell letter urging fans to keep fighting for "early detection and prevention of this terrible illness." Says friend and producer Sebastian Krys: "She always finished what she started. She never wasted a moment."
