THE NEXT BEST THING: WHO IS THE GREATEST CELEBRITY IMPERSONATOR?

THE STARTER WIFE
USA Network, May 31, 9 P.M. ET| [2.5 stars]
COMEDY-DRAMA
In this six-hour, five-week miniseries, Debra Messing plays Molly Kagan, a Hollywood wife who must rediscover herself after her movie-executive husband dumps her and cancels her life of pampered prestige. Not exactly a fresh story (it's based on Gigi Levangie Grazer's 2005 novel), but Messing is a smart, charming actress, and she keeps stepping lightly even as the indignities and implausibilities pile up. (Molly has a fling with a sexy homeless man who sleeps in the bushes of Malibu and reads Philip Roth.) Judy Davis has some ferociously funny moments as a friend who's in rehab.
