'GREEN' BURIALS
Readers were divided on our story about green burials at Ramsey Creek Preserve, a 70-acre cemetery outside Westminster, S.C., created for eco-friendly interments, in which the deceased are buried in biodegradable coffins. "I have seen the postmortem effect on a human body," writes Mollie Allen, a funeral director from Morton, Miss., "and cannot fathom the idea of allowing loved ones to decompose in a crude fashion." Others sided with the green process. "Kudos to people who have realized that bodies should be allowed to biodegrade and return to the earth," writes Mark Silverman of Clifton Park, N.Y. While green-burial advocates don't view cremation as a green alternative because of the energy required to burn a body, reader Mike Pevoto of Georgetown, Texas, says, "Cremation doesn't put back anything into the ground besides the ashes."
