ACTION

Just before raping a woman, the villain of this piece sneeringly tells her, "This will not be over quickly and you will not enjoy it." Ditto for 300.

Recapping part of Ancient Greek History 101, this combat-in-sandals movie tells the story of Spartan king Leonidas (Butler), who marched into battle with 300 brave warriors to fight against Persia's King Xerxes (Santoro) and a far more massive army. Based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 has the highly stylized look of a comic book for grown-ups, sort of Sin City, B.C. (minus the chesty babes). It also features lots of guys with washboard abs parading around in leather bikini bottoms, chopping off heads while extolling the virtues of freedom. I say, give me liberty—but spare me silly, jingoistic balderdash like this. (R)
