Giambattista Valli: Designer of the Moment

You're going to see a lot more of Giambattista Valli—Victoria Beckham will make sure of it. The Roman-born, Paris-based designer "is one of my favorites," says Beckham, who has worn his frocks to Katie Holmes's Italian wedding, to Paris fashion parties and out in L.A. His label is just five seasons old, but Valli, 40, is a veteran: Previously creative director for Emanuel Ungaro, he also put in time at Krizia and Fendi. After leaving Ungaro in 2004, he says,"I locked myself in my apartment and said, 'Okay, what is Giambattista Valli?'" The answer—smartly constructed, often sexy and always feminine dresses—made fans of Penélope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie. Beyond looking great, they find his designs are comfortable, a word rarely uttered on the red carpet. "Mamma mia," he says of his client (yes, he really says "Mamma mia"), "I want her to eat and to move. One of the biggest compliments is when someone says, 'It's like wearing a T-shirt.'"
