VIRGINIA TECH

"My heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives on that horrible day"
Bethanne Albamonti
Stonington, Conn.

In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, thank you for rising above sensationalism and not putting the face of a killer on the cover. It saddens me that other media outlets have given that monster far more face time than he deserves.
Renee Wagner

Reading your article about Seung-Hui Cho's rampage at Virginia Tech, I cried when I learned how Professor Liviu Librescu stood against his classroom door so his students could escape. The action was absolutely heroic, heartwarming and selfless, and he saved many lives because of it.
Anne O'Finley
Chicago, Ill.

It isn't about gun control, mental illness or campus security. The tragedy is that we have lost the contributions that these bright, caring young people would have made in our world. We cannot afford to lose any more.
Maureen Horvath
Truckee, Calif.

There is no doubt that we should mourn the victims and families of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, but we should also take this horrible experience and learn from it. Schools need to revise their plans, create preventive measures and talk to their students. Although it would be far better if the shootings had never occurred, the least we can do is take it to heart and make sure it never happens again.
McKinley Sherrod
Chicago, Ill.

MARY WINKLER

It is not up to me to judge Mary Winkler, but if she had the financial and emotional support that enabled her to hire a defense team, then she could have relied on that same support to leave her husband rather than shoot him.
Jennifer Foley
Brighton, Mich.

SIGOURNEY WEAVER

Thanks for the down-to-earth look at Sigourney Weaver's impeccable career. In a time when Hollywood actresses are nothing but warped images of artificial beauty, this woman of steel proves herself to be versatile, intelligent and ageless.
Megan Lynch
Stoney Creek, Ont.

GARBAGE BUSTERS

I was pleased to read about Tampa Bay garbage busters Mark Maksimowicz and Jeff and Vince Albanese, who are working so hard to clean up other people's refuse. I have been cleaning the street I live on since I moved here. I thought my neighbors would assume I was looking through junk for myself. Actually, just the opposite happened. I got to meet my neighbors and they were inspired to help out.
Leanne Sullivan
Boston, Mass.

VINDICATED
Readers were unanimous in their support for David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, the former Duke University lacrosse players who were cleared of all charges stemming from an alleged sexual assault at a 2006 team party. "These young men and their families went through hell during the past year because everyone assumed they were guilty before hearing all the facts," writes Anne Belluomini of Chicago. Despite his apology to the three athletes, Durham County district attorney Mike Nifong was lambasted by several readers for pursuing charges against them. "It's about time this appalling incident was brought to a close," writes Allison Killeen of Mount Dora, Fla. "Mr. Nifong should be disbarred." In fact, Nifong is facing ethics charges for his handling of the case that are scheduled to be heard in June and which could result in his disbarment.

Correction
In our May 14 issue, we incorrectly reported actor Adrian Grenier's age and the air date of his upcoming HBO documentary Shot in the Dark. Grenier is 30 years old and the documentary will debut June 3. We regret the errors.
