THE MET COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA
BEHIND THE SCENES
The Making of Her Gown
For her Met Costume Institute Gala debut, Kelly Ripa turns to Zac Posen for a curve-hugging, one-of-a-kind creation
She may be on TV every weekday, but when Kelly Ripa catches sight of herself in the gilded mirror that rests on the floor of Zac Posen's downtown Manhattan studio—clad in a one-shouldered peach gown—she barely recognizes herself. "I suddenly look curvaceous!" exclaims the slender, 5'4" talk show host before turning sideways and letting out a gasp. "Look at my tush! Tush, tush, tush!" And more curves lie ahead: Reaching for a quilted gold-and-bronze trapunto belt—which wasn't used for Posen's original design, shown as part of his fall 2007 collection—the designer cinches his silk-crepe confection. "He's given me a waist where I didn't think I had one," Ripa marvels. No wonder then that even her husband, Mark Consuelos, did a double take when she modeled the gown for him at home. "He actually got off the sofa and stopped watching the Mets game," Ripa says with a grin. "That was a sign that I had found the dress!"
Glamour gals opted heavily for metals—from cool silvers to warm bronzes—at the annual Costume Institute gala in N.Y.C. May 7

Behind the Seams
ROMPER ROOM: Take note, Tom: Katie Holmes knows exactly what kind of lingerie she likes. After spotting Dessous's Capucine romper in a magazine, she had her stylist on the set of Mad Money request it—as well as a slew of other items—from the N.Y.C.- based line. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Richie are also fans of the label....

SHARP CARDS: When it comes to personalized stationery, Gwyneth Paltrow and Mischa Barton are taking it beyond the monogram: They both ordered ridiculously cute Design-her Gals notecards, which feature characters they can create online in their—and their loved ones'—images. ANGIE'S GO-TO OUTFIT: Even A-listers will do anything to avoid ironing. St. John's spokesmodel Angelina Jolie has worn the label's dress-and-jacket combo (right) to three high-profile events. Why? The outfit's stretch material doesn't wrinkle, so she can roll it up, toss it in a bag and go.

GOING BLONDE GRACEFULLY
With stars like Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and, most recently, Cameron Diaz switching back and forth between dark and light locks, we wondered why they often go through a reddish stage in between. "To make your hair dark from blonde, you have to use a color refresher to make it look shiny and dark," explains Rita Hazan, who has colored Simpson's tresses. "When you transition back to blonde, you let the refresher wash out and you have to go through an orange-y, reddish stage for a month or two. Then you can achieve the blonde you want—in a healthy way."
PETE WENTZ'S LADY JEANS
Pete Wentz is man enough to love his teenybopper denims: The Fall Out Boy bassist (and Ashlee Simpson beau) has 10 pairs of gray, size-5 DKNY women's jeans and has been photographed numerous times in them. "I am the kind of guy who can't ever find anything that fits him quite right," he says. "I wear the same pair every day." So how tight are they? Says Wentz: "It's not fun if you can zip them up without lying down."

BEAUTY MYSTERY OF THE WEEK
Do The Olsens Really Tan?
Though Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seem fair as can be, they appear to love bronzing: They recently requested the entire line of Xen-Tan self-tanners--and use it frequently, according to their manager.
