Alpha Dog may be filled with attention-getting turns by up-and-coming young actors, but it's 26-year-old Ben Foster who stands out. Every time he shows up as Jake, a troubled crankhead whose vicious attack on a drug dealer leads to his kid brother's kidnapping, you can't help but ask, "Who is that guy?" Last seen as Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand, Foster seethes with explosive rage one minute and exudes confused hurt the next. It's an exceedingly tricky combination to pull off, bringing to mind a young Robert De Niro, Sean Penn or, more recently, Ryan Gosling. Not bad company to keep.
