Barbaro stunned the horse-racing world, and even casual fans, when he won the Kentucky Derby by 6½ lengths last May. Two weeks later he shattered his right hind leg shortly after coming out of the gate at the Preakness Stakes. For more than eight months, vets tried everything and anything to save him; then, when complications from the original injury made even standing painful, owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson made an agonizing decision. Barbaro was euthanized on Jan 29. "Certainly," Gretchen said, "grief is the price we all pay for love."
