COMEDY

Saturday Night Live is like that friend you keep around because when she's funny, she's really funny, but most of the time she just annoys you. Halfway through its 32nd season (and with a newly downsized cast), the NBC institution is as hit-or-miss as ever. Choosing familiar targets—George Bush, Nancy Grace, Hillary Clinton—over pop-culture hot buttons (where's the killer View spoof I've been dying for?), the show ends up feeling stalled. No joke: a recent episode featured a MacGyver send-up. Seriously? But it's not all time-warped humor: bright spots include the sparky Weekend Update duo of Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers and viral video genius Andy Samberg, whose "Blizzard Man" rapper (with an assist from sharp guest host Ludacris) cracked me up. Without Samberg, the show would have no buzz.
