He has been an American gigolo as well as an officer and a gentleman. He has played bad cop in Internal Affairs and good-at-heart takeover artist in Pretty Woman. But the role Gere relishes most seems to he real-life political activist. He has been involved in the fight against AIDS and, as a disciple of the exiled Dalai Lama, once loudly heckled Henry Kissinger for failing to condemn China's occupation of Tibet. Not that Gere, who squires supermodel Cindy Crawford, 25, has ever been shy. "I had no qualms about showing my body," he once said of onscreen nudity. "I thought it was adventurous—adventurous of me personally and adventurous for any man to do it. But, yeah, I was driving it." Those days are past, he says. But, oh, what a ride.
