The Diana Years

If they had lived happily ever after that July 29, 1981, wedding extravaganza watched by millions, the last 15 years might have been ever so boring. Instead, we got to wallow in a sad but spectacular soap opera, replete with tears, scandal and bizarre surprises (who could have predicted the Squidgy tapes?). We learned a new royal lexicon: a is for adultery, b is for bulimia, c is for Camilla, d is for dysfunction (and now divorce), e is for eavesdropping. Meanwhile, Diana kept reinventing herself, from gawky to graceful to glamorous, from reserved to unguarded. In this special issue, we revisit the highs and lows of Diana's reign: blushing bride, dazzling princess, media manipulator, loving mom, passionate AIDS advocate, aggrieved wife, tenacious battler and, now, royal survivor. No matter what role she plays in the next act of her life, she'll always be a force to be reckoned with.
