Like the other female contestants, Maralyn Hershey was allowed to wear a sports bra. But she chose not to. "I had a little middle-aged fat, and I'm fairly chesty," she explains. "But, hell, if I had a body like theirs, I'd show it off too, honey." Making do with one pair of pants, though, was tough. "The cold rain at night. That stunk. God knows, they all heard enough of my complaining about my wet pants. But cold wet pants, that added a new dimension to it."

Stuff and No Nonsense

Apart from a "luxury item" (which could not be matches, tobacco or alcohol), these were the only permissibles:

2 pairs of shoes (sneakers and hiking boots)
3 pairs of socks
3 pairs of underwear
1 bathing suit
1 pair of short pants
1 pair of long pants
1 rain jacket
1 fleece or sweatshirt
2 hats (sun hat and winter hat)
1 pair of gloves
1 bra top for women
1 T-shirt or tank top
1 long-sleeve shirt
1 pair of sunglasses

Open in Emergency

Each tribe was given an identical first aid kit, filled with the following items:

3 compound pressure bandages
1 tube, antiseptic cream (75g)
4 sewing needles
2 condoms
58 tampons (29 regular, 29 super)
1 bottle of spray for insect bites (100ml)
2 bottles, sunscreen (250ml each)
2 bottles, water purification tablets (50 tablets per bottle)
1 ammo box (to hold everything)
