Picks and Pans Review: Mandrake

UPDATED 01/29/1979 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 01/29/1979 at 01:00 AM EST

NBC (8 p.m. ET)

The hypnotically gesturing comic-strip magician has been campily updated in this made-for-TVer, but his big trick may be making an audience disappear. Anthony Herrera plays Mandrake as an exotic pedant, Ji-Tu Cumbuka gives Lothar the lingo of black TV detectives and Simone Griffeth, as girl Friday Stacy, has little to do. When Mandrake assures a subject past events "will be as clear in your mind as Channel 4," viewers will note that channels, like minds, can be changed.
