The Romantic Couples
What a perfect valentine! My favorite couple, Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters, on the cover of my favorite magazine (PEOPLE, Feb. 19).

Interesting selections. Four of your 10 couples are "live-ins." There's only one once-married and not one long-married among them. Such couples, still romantic, do exist, you know.

Why didn't you include Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson?
Sue Brooks

Lisa Halaby and King Hussein?
Cindy Calkins

How on earth could you possibly omit Mike and Jean Burke?

Charles Silberman
When Charles Silberman, author of Criminal Violence, Criminal Justice, claims that most adult criminals receive just sentences it sounds as if he's talking about the Haldemans or Deans in the correctional system. I wonder if Silberman is aware that at least 1,500 men and women are serving life sentences in New York State because of the Rockefeller drug law.

"I am a critic of the Rockefeller drug law," says Silberman.—ED.
Mr. Silberman explains his personal experiences with crime were nonviolent in nature (burglary, pickpocketing) and then proceeds to compare his feelings ("probably very similar") with those who were the victims of one of our most violent crimes, rape. I am really disappointed.

Disgusting! The fact that The Non-Runner's Book is a best-seller just goes to show that any excuse we Americans can use to be fat and lazy will suffice. I say more power to Jim Fixx, Dr. Kenneth Cooper and other runners.

Pat Butler
Pat Butler's snow chains invention is a great idea, but wouldn't the chains work better on the drive wheels of the front-wheel-drive Mazda GLC used in your photos?
R. Michael Bortman
Springfield, Pa.
This particular Mazda is rear-wheel drive.

Andy Griffith
I enjoyed your story but you are obviously not trivia experts. While Griffith did star in the stage and movie versions of No Time for Sergeants, the TV treatment featured Sammy Jackson as Will Stockdale. Ask Ryan O'Neal. His brother Kevin played a supporting role in the series.
Ellen Florman Dweck
New York City
Griffith starred in the U.S. Steel Hour's TV production in 1955. In the 1964-65 TV series, Jackson played Stockdale, and Kevin O'Neal was Private Ben Whit-ledge, Will's friend.
—ED.
Andy Griffith's statement, "I don't like to party," seems to apply to all celebrities I read about nowadays. If they don't go to "Hollywood parties," who does?

Adlai Stevenson III
Now that Senator Stevenson is making the same good sense his father made, we can probably write off any hopes that he might one day be elected to the presidency.

I read your review of Dolly and Carol in Nashville and almost didn't watch it, figuring that you know what you're talking about. But you didn't and I did, and I sure was glad. Dolly and Carol were great!

Lawrence Phipps III
Your story on the fox hunt without foxes (Feb. 12) brings back a 40-year-old memory. I was commandant of Colorado Military School back then, and Senator Phipps, Lawrence's grandfather, invited Lt. Arthur Bell, instructor in equitation, and me to the Arapahoe Hunt on his ranch. Arthur and I rode in the U.S. Army uniform as pink coats were not in our wardrobe. It was a typical beautiful, bright Colorado day, and hunting the coyote was great. Suddenly, out of the brush ran the hapless beast. Lieutenant Bell yelled, "Look, there goes the son of a bitch now!" The Master of Foxhounds exclaimed, "No, no! It's tallyho, tallyho." We finished the hunt but were never invited back.
