Peter Strauss is impressive as a Folsom state penitentiary inmate obsessed with setting a new record in the mile. Michael Mann's taut script is ably supported by Richard Lawson as Strauss' only friend, Ed Lauter as his coach, and Roger E. Mosley and Brian Dennehy as fellow cons. The extras are actual Folsom inmates. The similarities are to The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.
