Picks and Pans Review: In Praise of Older Women
The rejuvenated Canadian film industry may well be set back years by this awful exploitation of May-December romances. Tom Berenger, the psychotic killer in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, plays a sex-starved young boy who becomes a sex-starved young man whose erotic odyssey takes him from Budapest during the 1956 Hungarian uprising to Montreal. Along the way he hooks up with a variety of cradle-robbing older women. Among them: Karen Black, as an unhappy professor's wife; Susan Strasberg, a violinist with a political conscience, and Canadian actress Helen Shaver, who finally gives young Berenger his comeuppance. Adapted from Stephen Vizinczey's novel of the same name, this shameful movie is soft-core porn masquerading as an R-rated feature.
