George Thorogood and the Destroyers
If you feel compelled to play rock but find the Stones zipless, disco unlistenable and New Wave unspeakable, one solution might be to go back to basics with guitarist Thorogood and his aptly named back-up duo, the Destroyers. From the Bo Diddleyesque classic Who Do You Love ("I've got a tombstone head and a graveyard mind/Just turned 22 and I don't mind dyin' ") to Elmore James' unsubtle love call, Baby Please Set a Date, Thorogood delivers blues-rock with unnostalgic energy and a rhythm-heavy electric bottleneck guitar that sounds like it has Y chromosomes. The only problem: The songs' similarities leave the LP a little in need of change of pace—a factor Thorogood compensates for in his live act with high kicks and a sincere, elegant duck walk.
