It's easier to rent than ride on this 18-mile stretch between Jamestown and Standard, Calif., since the 1891 vintage Rogers Steam Engine stays alive only through Hollywood's use of it. In the past, TV scenes from Bonanza, The Wild, Wild West and Lassie were filmed there. More recently Michael Landon's Little House on the Prairie and the new Disney flick, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, have used it for on-location shots. The train, running April though October, is part of the Sierra Railroad mini-system that also includes the Zephyr, which runs wine-and-cheese-tasting junkets between Jamestown and Cooperstown.
