Picks and Pans Review: Flesh and Fantasy
by Penny Stallings with Howard Mandelbaum
Most of this movie book consists of studio handout stills, but the islands of text and the captions are wildly irreverent, sometimes tasteless and often funny backchat about the stars. Spencer Tracy "was a sourpuss with a strong affection for the bottle and for most of his leading ladies." Vivien Leigh "refused to continue filming love scenes in Gone with the Wind unless Clark Gable remedied the foul odor produced by his dentures." "Chinese actor Keye Luke was fired from Dragon Seed because he made Katharine Hepburn look too artificial in her Peck and Peck pyjamas, Lilly Daché coolie hat and Oriental makeup." Stallings, a pop culture generalist who helped produce the Woodstock Festival in 1969, and Mandelbaum, a devoted movie buff, also add some delightful asides, such as quoting Cybill Shepherd saying, "I want to roam, to soar, geographically, educationally, musically."
