A distinguished, mostly black cast—including Esther Rolle, Diahann Carroll, Roger L Mosley, Madge Sinclair and Ruby Dee—admirably translates Maya Angelou's powerful memoir about the Depression-era South. Youngsters Constance Good and John M. Driver II are nicely undersentimentalized as a brother and sister trying to cope with being black 40 years BR (before Roots).
