Picks and Pans Review: Peaks Valleys Honky-Tonks & Alleys

Michael Murphey

None of his subsequent tunes has sold like Wildfire, but Murphey is an original whose country tunes have a Plains-state sweep to them. Here he reprises his own lament, Backslider's Wine, as well as Sam Cooke's 1960 smash Chain Gang, and amusingly turns (My Baby Loves the) Western Movies into a medley with his own Another Cheap Western. The results would be perfect background music for, say, a 55-mph drive across Oklahoma.
