Picks and Pans Review: The Best Place to Be

NBC (9 p.m. ET)

Donna Reed, in her first appearance since her series succumbed 13 years ago, returns with another woman-on-her-own variation, based on Helen Van Slyke's 1976 best-seller. As a widowed, middle-aged heroine, Reed is still primly appealing but she has to confide in everyone—Mom, friends, sons, lovers, lawyers and her daughter (niftily played by Stephanie Zimbalist). For much of this four-hour movie (it ends Tuesday) the best place to be is in the kitchen, making a sandwich.
