Picks and Pans Review: Heart to Heart

Susie Allanson

She made a splash last year as a country performer with her hit We Belong Together. But Allanson, a Las Vegas-born woman who once ushered at Merv Griffin tapings, is really a voice in search of a style. Whatever else this album is, it isn't country music, even though it includes her version of the Bee Gees' tune Words, which made the C&W charts. Allanson also sings, among other things, Buddy Holly's Love's Made a Fool of You, the onetime Chiffons hit One Fine Day, a bouncy song called Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back and the more plaintive Heart to Heart. Most of the time she sounds too wispy to rock and too bright to be bluesy. On her own Hide Me in Your Love, though, she strikes a steady middle-of-the-road pop sound. That may be her best niche.
