Michel Serrault won the Cesar, France's Oscar, in this comedy, portraying an aging female impersonator in a St.-Tropez nightclub. His lover, masterfully played by Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi, manages the club whose name (which roughly translates "The Madwomen's Cage") provides the movie's title. When Tognazzi's son gets engaged, the fun begins. It centers on the son's attempts to hide his father's life-style from his prospective in-laws, climaxing at a prenuptial dinner that more than makes up for earlier lapses. Italian director Edouard Molinaro mostly avoids the cheap laughs so often resorted to in movies about gay life. (In French, with English subtitles) (R)
