Except in the spring at the time of the Houston Festival or the art show, the 152-year-old square—once a trading center for cowboys, Indians and ranchers—is distinctive mostly as a hangout for winos and assorted petty criminals. The interesting architecture is decaying, and the site once under consideration as the capital of Texas is now mostly an eyesore with derelicts camped out on benches provided by the Junior League.
