Picks and Pans Review: Solo Faces
Obsessed men are impossible to deal with in life but not necessarily in fiction. Salter's new novel is about two driven mountain climbers who rescue a group of Italian climbers in the Alps and get a taste of fame. These inarticulate heroes come through vividly, and the climbing scenes are chillingly told. The subject is perfect for Salter's elegant prose, and the story is haunted by a question: Why do men risk so much when the rewards are so obscure? (Little, Brown, $8.95)
