Picks and Pans Review: Half & Half

Jerry Reed

Even though he has good-ole-boyed with Burt Reynolds in three movies (including Smokey and the Bandit) and played a trucker on a flop TV series, Nashville 99, Reed is best at his picking and singing. Those talents are the halves of this LP title. The singing includes no songs by Reed (so there's no touch of the wit of the old Lord, Mr. Ford), but Gimme Back My Blues is a nice honky-tonker with a glib acoustic guitar solo by Kenny Penny. The instrumental side gives Reed a chance to sound variously like George Benson, Les Paul and (on Stars and Stripes Forever) his mentor Chet Atkins. There are worse people to sound like.
