Picks and Pans Review: One for the Road

Willie Nelson and Leon Russell

Though it's been a while since Nelson wrote any songs of his own, why worry when he's reviving standards as well as he does here. Russell, singing only incidentally, provides an ideal piano complement on four sides that wander from Danny Boy and Sioux City Sue to bluesy versions of One for My Baby and Trouble in Mind. Willie even wraps his relaxed style around the Tony Bennett hit Because of You and makes it sound as if it had been written in a Texas truck stop.
