Picks and Pans Review: Kid Blue

Louise Goffin

Carole King is only 37 but Goffin, 19, is her daughter—by her first marriage, to collaborator Gerry Goffin. There is, so far, little family resemblance. While Goffin leans to harder rock than her mother, her voice is still thin and inflexible. Her compositions, such as Kid Blue, a sort of tribute to the Sex Pistols' Johnny Rotten, and Jimmy and the Tough Kids ("I'd rather be a misfit/Than follow the rules"), sound naive. There's promise in her version of the Beatles' All I've Got to Do and in her Trapeze, but for now Goffin sounds like a kid thrown into a major league lineup before she is ready.
