Picks and Pans Review: Spy

Carly Simon

What the Captain and Tennille are to bubbly romance and fantasy, Simon and husband James Taylor are to bitter introspection and melancholia: the modern masters. This LP is a prime example, including as it does Carly's hit single Vengeance, her ironically titled We're So Close, Coming to Get You (about a mother fighting for custody of her children) and Memorial Day, which though enigmatic is clearly not about anything happy. The marvel is that depression can sound so good. But then Simon is a resourceful singer. She also surrounds herself with the best in sidemen: David Sanborn, Warren Bernhardt, the Brecker Brothers, Hubert Laws and Steve Gadd, among others. She can also, on such occasions as Taylor's delightful disco send-up Spy, get a little less serious and still seem to be herself.
