This is the first of three John Cheever stories adapted for TV by young playwrights (Wendy Wasserstein in this case). Mara Hobel achingly portrays an 8-year-old seeking affection from her party-going parents, Edward Herrmann and Sigourney (Alien) Weaver. That the gifted Eileen Heckart and Rachel Roberts play babysitters shows PBS's commitment to this powerful series.
