Picks and Pans Review: Catwise

by Wilbur Pippin and Marian Winters

There seem to be hundreds of collections of cat pictures published every year, and this one includes the basic selection of cuddly, cunning and cold-looking kitties—a few of them not exactly in focus. But it has a gimmick. Pippin, a fashion photographer, and Winters, a Tony-and Emmy-winning actress-playwright, have captioned the photos with famous quotations. The Boswell line, "I would choose to make a bargain with a good decent family who have every day a tolerable dinner," accompanies a cat looking wishfully in a window. Petrarch's "Where you are is of no moment, but only what you are doing there" adjoins a cat up a tree. Insatiable felinophiles will lap it up. (Knopf, $4.95)
