Picks and Pans Review: La Diva

Aretha Franklin

From the sheer intensity of her voice—remarkable even for the dynamic Franklin—to the superb production, this LP showcases the diva of soul at her finest. She glides easily from disco to ballads, and Aretha's touch with ballads is classic—especially on I Was Made for You, written by her son, Clarence. She also demonstrates some of her long-overlooked songwriting skills on Honey I Need Your Love. But it's when she sings that she can still make the spine tingle—not to mention sway, shake and quiver.
