Weather Report

A combination of studio cuts and live concert appearances on four continents, this two-record set exposes listeners to all the elements that have made the award-winning quartet a model in progressive jazz-rock. Keyboardist Josef Zawinul, bassist Jaco Pastorius, sax man Wayne Shorter and new drummer Peter Erskine perform a decade's worth of compositions, from 1969's In a Silent Way to this year's Sightseeing. Although the proven material and sympathetic audiences supply an adrenaline flow on the live tracks, Weather Report sounds more cohesive under controlled studio conditions. The overall results are high spirited; the set is especially recommended to those who are still unfamiliar with the work of this bellwether group.
