In September 1944 the Allies attempted a complex aerial invasion of Holland. It failed—and so does the only rarely stirring movie by director Richard Attenborough. Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford, James Caan, Sean Connery and Michael Caine march through what TIME called a movie too long. Those who disagree can tune in the concluding two hours Friday night.
