Picks and Pans Review: Angel of the Night

UPDATED 11/26/1979 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 11/26/1979 at 01:00 AM EST

Angela Bofill

Bofill has a distinctive voice that in today's droning disco market is exceptional. Her range stretches from the torchy I Try to the almost Billie Holidayish Rainbow Child, and she wrote half the tunes herself. The production by veteran keyboardist Dave Grusin is tailored nicely to her style; the only disappointment is her interpretation of People Make the World Go 'Round, where Grusin overdid the arrangement. A survivor of the troubled South Bronx, Bofill deserves her New York jazz cult following and more.
