The 101 original Little Rascals shorts Hal Roach produced from 1922 to 1938 captured a vision of irrepressible childhood that was close to Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn in its innocence and rich period detail. In this animated paean to that live-action series, Matthew Beard (who played Stymie) does a voice-over as the butcher, and Darla Hood Granson (the original Darla) taped the voice of Mom before her recent death. Such famous Rascal alums as Jackie Cooper and Robert Blake are absent. But it's for the best. To reduce this treasure lode of Americana to a cartoon seems a crime. Why not some prime-time repeats?
