Johnny Mathis

Almost every six months Mathis releases an LP. For diehard fans (and newly converted ones) they can't come too often. This time around Math-is has moved heavily—or as heavily as his feathery sound allows—into the dance market, rerecording That Old Black Magic, To the Ends of the Earth and Night and Day to a diooo boat. While other singers have embarrassed themselves redoing such hallowed material, Mathis makes it work. Perhaps because of his success singing duets (with Deniece Williams and Jane Olivor), he introduces Stephanie Lawrence, an English singer, this time, on You Saved My Life. Twenty-two years after his first hit, Wonderful, Wonderful, Mathis' voice and phrasing are as ingratiating as ever.
